Introduction

Abdulharis.ac.id, Maros – Masjids (mosques) are not only places of worship, but also places of learning and social development. Masjids have a long history of providing education and literacy to their communities, especially in Southeast Asia, where many people face challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, and marginalization.

Masjid-based literacy programs are initiatives that use masjids as venues and resources for delivering literacy and education services to adults and children, such as reading classes, book clubs, libraries, computer labs, and vocational training. These programs aim to empower people with knowledge and skills that can improve their lives and contribute to the development of their societies.

Call for Participants

We are pleased to invite you to the International Seminar on Masjid Based Literacy “Southeast Asia Experiences on Masjid Development”, which will be held on June 9, 2023 at the Masjid Al Markaz, Maros, Indonesia.

This seminar is organized by the Ikatan Alumni Badan Komunikasi Pemuda Remaja Masjid Indonesia (IKA BKPRMI) – in conjunction to Musyawarah Nasional, and aims to share and discuss the best practices and challenges of promoting literacy and education through masjids in Southeast Asia, as well as to explore the potential of masjids as centers of learning and social development in the region.

The seminar will feature keynote speakers, panel discussions, workshops, and site visits to some of the most innovative and successful masjid-based literacy programs in Southeast Asia. One of the highlights of the seminar will be a visit to Maros, the home of Syekh Yusuf Al Makassari, a prominent Islamic scholar and leader who played a significant role in spreading Islam and education in Indonesia.

The seminar is open to scholars, practitioners, policymakers, religious leaders, and anyone interested in the topic of masjid-based literacy and development. We look forward to seeing you at the seminar and learning from your valuable insights and experiences.
